Gaining Confidence - She Leads Digital

Isn’t confidence an interesting concept? We are told we either ‘have it’ or we don’t, but what if that’s not the case. What if we got rid of this whole idea that we have to born with it to have it. Self-confidence is something we all struggle with so it’s very important to understand that confidence is a skill that we have the ability to learn, develop and practice. So, if you’re feeling really insecure or anxious about your confidence, that’s okay, there are certainly ways you can gain it on your own.

As an entrepreneur, how confident you feel is very much up to you. You don’t often have people patting you on the back telling you-you’re doing a good job after every project. It’s a lot about trying to pat yourself on the back. In my experience, I found that my insecurities could totally take over my motivation and will to want to write because I didn’t think I would be good enough. So to help myself, or work on patting myself on the back, I did a few things to help gain my own confidence up and keep it there.

Believe In What You Are Doing
Believing in what you are doing is a huge factor in how much confidence you will have in yourself. How can you speak and act confidently about something that you don’t really believe in? Knowing wholeheartedly what you are doing and knowing the ins and outs of every aspect of your job can help you be your most confident self. Personally, I’ve always found that putting myself in a position where I could answer any question that was thrown my way which always helped people take me seriously. I could stay heavily involved in conversation which was a huge advantage for me and great for my confidence levels. Knowledge is power, therefore, take in as much of it as you can so you can deliver your knowledge in the best way that you can.

Speak with Confidence
The tone of your voice can show just how confident you are in yourself. Speaking with pride and assertiveness will leave others captivated by what you are saying. This doesn’t mean to just be louder or say more things; it involves listening, pausing and thinking about what you are saying before you say it.  Next time you’re in a meeting or need to present a project, relax the tension in your shoulders and jaw, stay present, and focus on what you need to get across to the room and on what you are saying. You don’t have to think of everyone in their underwear, just know that everyone is there to listen to you and that’s something to be extremely proud of.

Body Language
My mother used to always say to me “walk with your back straight and your head held high”, and that’s exactly what I do every time I walk into a room. Owning your space and feeling pride within yourself will help turn heads wherever you go. Make sure you are always standing up or sitting up straight, which shows that you are alert. Some other things I find very important is eye contact and what you do with your hands. It may seem hard at first, but keeping eye contact with those you are speaking to and not fidgeting with your hands are simple things that show your confidence levels. Practice on friends and family first, it can make a world of difference.

Change Your Thoughts
More often than not our own thoughts are our biggest enemy. It’s incredible how we can just sit in one spot and totally destroy ourselves before we have even had a chance to try and succeed. These negative thoughts are what we need to change. Confidence comes from within ourselves, so if we are able to create our own positive thoughts and affirmations, then we can create a more confident version of ourselves. Prepare yourself properly, pump yourself up and believe in yourself!

Keep Your Social Media Confident
With social media being such a huge presence in our lives, it’s not just important, it’s crucial that we keep what we look at positive and uplifting. Unfollow people that make you feel insecure or down on yourself and follow people who are inspiring and motivating.

Confidence is something that we are able to learn, not just something we are born with. Using some of these techniques above and practicing them will allow you to create a more confident version of yourself. Believe in what you’re doing and believe in yourself. That type of energy is magnetic.
